Comments
AIUI includes a collaborative commenting system that lets team members leave feedback directly on the canvas. Pin comments to specific locations, discuss in threads, and resolve feedback when addressed.
Opening the Comments Panel
Access comments through multiple entry points:
- Comments icon in the right toolbar - opens the comments panel showing all threads
- Click directly on canvas while in comment mode to start a new thread
- Notification badge appears on the comments icon when unresolved comments exist
The comments panel displays all threads organized by status, with unresolved threads at the top.
Pinning a Comment Thread
To add a comment at a specific canvas location:
- Click the comment icon in the toolbar to enter comment mode
- Click anywhere on the canvas where you want to pin the comment
- A comment input appears at that exact position
- Type your message and press Enter or click Post
The comment marker remains pinned to that canvas position. When you pan or zoom the canvas, the marker moves accordingly to stay at the correct location relative to your design.
Writing Messages
Comments support rich text for clear communication:
- Write your feedback, question, or suggestion in the text input
- Press Enter to submit (or Shift + Enter for a new line)
- Your name and timestamp are automatically attached
- Comments appear immediately for all project members
Keep comments specific and actionable. Reference particular elements or areas of the design to make feedback clear.
Replying in Threads
Build conversations by replying to existing comments:
- Click on any comment marker on the canvas, or select a thread from the comments panel
- The thread expands to show all messages
- Type your reply in the input at the bottom of the thread
- Press Enter to add your reply
Threaded conversations keep related discussion together. All participants in a thread can see the full history and context.
Resolving Threads
When feedback has been addressed:
- Open the comment thread
- Click the Resolve button (checkmark icon)
- The thread is marked as resolved and collapsed
Resolving a thread signals that the feedback has been handled without deleting the conversation history.
Resolved vs Unresolved
Comments exist in two states:
Unresolved threads:
- Displayed prominently on the canvas with visible markers
- Listed at the top of the comments panel
- Indicate pending feedback that needs attention
- Count shown in the notification badge
Resolved threads:
- Markers are hidden or dimmed on the canvas
- Moved to a "Resolved" section in the comments panel
- Can be reopened if the issue resurfaces
- Preserved for historical reference
Use the filter in the comments panel to show/hide resolved threads as needed.
Who Can Comment
Commenting permissions are based on project roles:
| Role | Can Comment |
|---|---|
| Viewer | Yes |
| Editor | Yes |
| Admin | Yes |
| Owner | Yes |
Anyone with viewer access or above can participate in comment threads. This means even team members who cannot edit the design can still provide feedback and join discussions.
Viewers can:
- Create new comment threads
- Reply to existing threads
- Resolve threads they started
Editors and above can:
- All viewer capabilities
- Resolve any thread in the project
Best Practices
Be specific: Pin comments directly on the element you're discussing rather than leaving general notes.
Use threads: Reply in existing threads rather than creating new comments for the same topic.
Resolve promptly: Mark threads as resolved once addressed to keep the canvas clean and signal progress.
Tag locations: When a comment relates to a specific node, click near that node to pin the comment there.
